After severe flooding, PRP were appointed to assess the damage to a retaining wall and provide a comprehensive report. Our findings were accepted by the insurers and PRP were appointed to undertake the structural design of the new retaining wall, project tendering and contract administrator services throughout construction to completion.
The project involved several complexities that demanded a meticulously planned and executed approach. These
included:
1.Working adjacent to a live watercourse: this necessitated careful planning and adherence to strict environmental regulations ensuring minimal disruption and protection of the natural habitat.
2. Managing water levels: reducing water levels was imperative to create a safe environment for construction. PRP engineered a sump in the brook to facilitate water pumping downstream to achieve a relatively dry working area.
3. Installation of sheet piles: the saturated bed (sludge) of the brook had to be contained to enable the installation of
formwork and concrete pouring. Sheet piles were implemented to retain the sludge.
The successful completion of the project yielded significant results and achievements:
1.Optimal protection and safety: the newly constructed retaining wall provided enhanced protection against potential
flooding and ensured the safety of nearby structures.
2. Efficient water management: PRP’s innovative approach to managing water levels allowed for safe and unhindered construction in the watercourse area.
3. Environmentally compliant execution: PRP adhered strictly to environmental regulations, safeguarding the surrounding ecosystem.
4. Effective sludge clearance: PRP facilitated the efficient removal of approximately 4 tonnes of sludge and debris from the watercourse bed.
