Transport Assessments

Also called traffic assessments and traffic impact assessments these are increasingly becoming a requirement for planning applications, to report the likely effects of a proposed development on surrounding road networks and either demonstrate that the network can cope or show what improvements are necessary.

We have a wide range of experience in undertaking transport assessments associated with both new build and expansion of existing developments in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

Any transport assessment prepared for you will examine all the relevant features of...

• Existing highway conditions.
• Existing traffic flows.
• Local infrastructure.
• Existing and proposed traffic management plans.

This will involve visiting the site to assess the local road conditions and may require one or more traffic surveys or counts.  We can then assess the likely impact of your new development on the local road network using existing data or the TRICS database.  This computerised database holds traffic survey data, such as the amount of traffic an existing development generated, as well as information about its size and other descriptions relevant to the development and its location. The system challenges and validates assumptions about the transport impacts of new developments. The database is capable of complex trip rate calculations and graphical representation of rates and patterns which can be applied, by comparison of certain parameters, to almost any proposed scheme.

The assessment may result in new highway works being required to take account of any additional traffic flows.  By working closely with local Highways Authorities and using our expertise in road design we are usually able to mitigate any restrictions or conditions which they may seek to apply to the scheme.

Your report will be tailored to your specific development plans so as to produce a realistic and validated model of the scheme. It will also assess opportunities for sustainable travel related to a development site including public transport as well as travel by bicycle and on foot. It will support the case for granting permission for the development.
